I am also an immigrant, living on the West Coast in United States. During the three years that I have lived in USA, I was teased because of my race. And there are still a lot of stereotypes about Chinese students like me, for example, we are supposed to be the smartest and the best at math. Luckily though, I had less problems than Henry because the bullies' target was not me. Henry and Keiko remind me of Romeo and Juliet because they are in love, about the same age, and their races are enemies( Japan and China were in war).
There are still constant conflict between Japan and China, and the older generation in China still has hatred toward the Japanese government. My grandma tells me wartime stories between Japan and China when she was only ten, and the prejudice still exists, unfortunately, against Japan. Chinese biased news are often reporting what the Japanese government have done wrong, and how they are harming Chinese political and economic interests. The Executive Order that President Roosevelt carried out is kind of similar to President Trump's Alien (Muslim) Ban, and discrimination against the Asian races still exists, especially in the East.

ReplyDeleteI think that what happens with the Japanese internment camps is very similar to what happens with the Nazis in the same time period. The Nazi's interned and killed millions of jews all across Europe for no apparent reason. Families were ripped apart, millions died, people displaced; it was a complete disaster. The Japanese in America may have had it better off, but they still experienced things such as families being ripped apart and their rights stripped as suspicion and paranoia of spies grew.
