I do not think that The Hotel on The Corner of Bitter and Sweet matches the exact layout of the heroes journey but do roughly follow the plan. Henry doesn't exactly have a call to adventure but meeting Kieko could be the call to adventure and the supernatural aid. I think that the moment Henry goes behind his fathers back to see Kieko is considered the crossing of the threshold because Henry is not used disappointing and going against his father's wishes. I think that the road of trials are when Kieko and her family are taken away and put into camp because then Henry has to be by himself which is tough because his family isn't exactly the most supportive of his feelings.

I think that the refusal of return is when Kieko disappears and Henry has to learn to let go of her even though it is very tough for him. I think that the rescue from without is when Henry meets Ethal because he is learning to move on and still be happy. The freedom to live is when Henry and Keiko meet again because even after being away from each other for most of their lives they both end up happy.
